‘Our analysts have done their absolute best, Your Majesty,’ Eston said. ‘Their conclusions are not absolutely certain, but they have significant evidence linking the death of King Kaleg to the Archpriestess of Mysara, Lemaria.’

Federik looked at the old man kneeling at the bottom of the steps in the audience chamber. ‘Lemaria?’

‘Yes, Your Majesty.’

‘You expect me to believe that she cast the spell which–’

‘No, Your Majesty. We believe Lemaria’s connection is as an instigator. She commissioned the assassination.’

‘Agedama?’ Federik asked.

‘We have gathered no evidence suggesting a connection to the Church of Mysara. They are, as it happens, at the bottom of our list of suspects.’

‘It is… difficult to believe. I’d like to see this evidence you’ve gathered, Eston.’

‘Your Majesty, I can present our reports, but all I would be giving you is a transcription of the testimony of our investigator. They used magic to analyse the connections in the room. There is nothing to see.’

Federik frowned, looking up toward the ceiling. ‘Tomorrow is the funeral, and my coronation. I’ll consider this information and make a judgement once all the formalities are done with. I’d like both of you to continue your attempts to uncover the truth with particular emphasis on anything which may tie the Church of Mysara to the crime.’

‘Of course, Your Majesty,’ Eston said.

‘If that’s what you want, King Federik,’ Agedama said.

‘It is,’ Federik stated firmly. ‘Make it happen. Find me the assassin, no matter who it might be.’
